Three poems by Chloe Stricklin

Monster

Wide-eyed, skin flushed,
a smile cherry-red
and fingers laced
with my own.

You slept next to me
the night before
you swallowed me whole.

Hybristophilia

Midnight eyes through the barrel of a gun:
Darling, you’re all I’ve tried to love.
You never said we’d have to run.

Darling, this world will be ours:
Your face and shirt are stained with blood,
midnight eyes through the barrel of a gun.

Darling, get back in the car:
I drag my feet out of the mud,
you never said we’d have to run.

Darling, it won’t leave a scar:
You kiss me where your hand had stung,
midnight eyes through the barrel of a gun.

Darling, let’s dance in the dark:
Spin me out until the sirens come,
you never said we’d have to run.

Bullets crash like falling stars:
Darling, it’s okay, we’ve won.
Midnight eyes through the barrel of a gun,
You never said we’d have to run.

Why I Will Never Date Another Psych Major

You kept my birthday
on a sticky note right beneath
a list of everyone and their mothers’
Myers-Briggs types (except your own
because you changed it weekly)
and I wonder if that’s all you have
left of me.

But I guess I don’t miss
those sprinklings of philosophy
you used to garnish your sentences–
the parsley on your pasta.
You think you’re so Utilitarian,
but the only happiness that matters
is your own.

As you were walking out
you said, I understand if
you feel the need to write
about this. I’ll never object
to being in your poems.
