7/5 – Travel Writing Contests: Trazzler and Road Junky

Our Writing Contest of the Week features contests that are:

  1. Inexpensive for the broke-ass artist to enter. We look for contests that cost $20 or less and prefer no-fee contests.
  2. Offering decent cash-money prizes. What’s decent is open to interpretation, but significant compensation to us is at least twice the entry fee, and preferably more. So minimum $40 and up.
  3. Going to raise a writer’s profile with publication on a legit site with a decent readership. Maybe you’ll be published on someone’s personal blog, but you’ll get $100 for it and rights revert back to you. That’s still damn good, in our opinion.

Barring these standards, we’ll also include contests where the prize is non-monetary but beneficial to writers, i.e. books or otherwise writing-related prizes, so long as there’s no entry fee and the contest’s rules aren’t overly punishing. After all, why slave over a perfectly constructed piece only to have all your rights taken over by a contest that’s never gonna do anything with it?

That all being said, here are this week’s contests, both of which happen to be travel writing related for all you writers with itchy feet. Good luck!

Trazzler On the Road Writing Contest

With 15 prizes totaling $6,000 and 80 nights at luxury Fairmont Hotels around the world, this contest has some pretty hot sponsorship and prizes for the lucky winners. According to Trazzler’s website, the concept of the contest is Jack Kerouac’s succint summary of travel, “The road is life.” The goal? Write about “the in-between places, quirky attractions, scenic drives, irresistible pitstops, natural oases, sleepy forgotten towns, places of pilgrimage, roadside enigmas, monuments, crossroads, and one-of-a-kind ways of getting from point A to point B.”

Deadline: August 31, 2010
Entry fee: FREE!
Prizes: People’s Choice Grand Prize is 10 nights at Fairmont Hotels, Editor’s Choice Grand Prize is 15 nights in a Fairmont Hotel plus a $5,000 freelance contract to write 20 trips for Trazzler.com. There are also 9 People’s Choice Runner Up prizes (5 nights at Fairmont Hotels) and 2 Editor’s Choice Runner Up prizes (5 nights in a Fairmont Hotel plus a $500 freelance contract to write 10 trips)
