Dzanc Books Creative Writing Sessions: writing critiques for the broke-ass
While there are plenty of creative writing programs offered by universities, and lots of courses available as one-off workshops or even summer-long programs, most rebellious writers find themselves hard-pressed to come up with the cash to allow themselves to participate in these types of career-enhancing love-fests. Thanks to the awesome, creative folks at Dzanc Books, now even the most terminally and perpetually broke-ass of writers can afford a personal critique from a published author.
How so? The Dzanc Books Creative Writing Sessions are available year-round, and allow writers to choose blocks of time with a specific mentor. Fees are vastly smaller than the average writing workshop, at $20 for 1 hour, $30 for 2 hours and $50 for 4 hours. (As a quick comparison: a 1-hour non-fiction writing online workshop with Eric Butterman hosted by the Austin-based Writers’ League of Texas will set you back $149 if you’re a member, and $209 if you’re not.)
Dzanc’s Creative Writing Sessions are driven by the writers who use them, rather than the mentors that are reading their work. As the Dzanc Books website deftly summarizes:
The program is being offered at an extremely low rate – many of the instructing authors volunteering their time to Dzanc do similar work as freelancers and charge much greater rates than are being offered here through the DCWS. Other workshops and writing programs charge a lump sum of several hundred dollars up front. Not only does the DCWS allow you to control and target your expenses, but 100% of the money brought in by Dzanc by our DCWS goes to supporting the writing programs we run for students grades 4-12. These additional programs – currently being run nationally by Dzanc – are offered free of charge to students who would not otherwise be able to afford and experience the sort of writing programs Dzanc offers.
